Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players can get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in nearly all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complicated initially, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play easily enough.
