Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems complex initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of play simply enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting range of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low.
