Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha hi lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complicated at the outset, following a few hands you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi lo offers an overwhelming assortment of betting possibilities and because you have several players shooting for the high hand, as well as a few battling for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
