Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming array of betting options and seeing that you have many players battling for the high hand, and several battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi lo.
