Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha hi lo begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players often get flustered. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in just about every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
While it seems difficult at the outset, after a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi lo offers an exciting range of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high, and a few battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi lo.
