Omaha Hi Lo: General Summary
July 31st, 2020 at 7:25Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha Hi-Lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
While it seems complicated initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an amazing assortment of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha hi-low.
